I have a couple things I would like to make, but I don't know of any idea where do go to get 3D printing dones. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, if anyone here has done 3D modeling/printing what program do you use?
I do quite a bit of 3D modelling, for myself as well as quid-pro-quo with a few resin conversion companies out there. I make the model, they make a mold for me.
The program I use is Rhino 3D. It is the most common program for people making 3D models for printing. There are several free programs that I hear people talking about, but when I tried them they were very buggy. Rhino is expensive unless you are in school or know someone who has a .EDU email address, then it is $200. Worth every penny.
For 3D printing service I use www.shapeways.com. Besides being a pretty good value they will also be a middle man. I can put my model on Shapeways and the person who had me make the model simply orders it from my 'store' in the color and resolution level that they want. I could also put a built-in profit margin if I wanted to, but normally I just let it go out for cost. They used to have a better pricing structure and free shipping, but that went away. Now each model has a start-up flat rate tooling cost so if you think you will want a bunch of stuff out of the same material and resolution it is best to make one 'model' out of a bunch of smaller ones shoved into one file.
I usually order very small parts at Frosted Ultra Detail and tank-sized things as White Detail.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
